By answering the following twenty questions, you can measure if you are ready to be a writer and how determined you are to write a book.

Do you tell your friends that you write? Yes/No………
Do you spend adequate time editing you work? Yes/No……… (if yes, are you sure?)
Do you get lost in your writing and lose all sense of time? Yes/No………
Are you prepared to put many hours of slog into your writing? Perhaps as many as someone doing a Ph.D. degree? Yes/No………
Are you willing to learn writing skills? Yes/No………
Are you prepared to rewrite a manuscript if it has been rejected Yes/No………
Will you do (almost) anything to be a writer? Yes/No………
Do you encourage your imagination to invent stories? Yes/No………
Have you felt that you wanted to be a writer for longer than a year? Yes/No………
Are you prepared to write even if you fail to be published? Yes/No………
Do you yearn to be a published author? Yes/No………
Do you read many books, of many genres ? Yes/No………
Do you have favourite authors? Yes/No………
Do you need the support of a partner to write? Yes/No………
Do you know what subjects/genre you want to write? Yes/No………
Are you prepared to have a lot of wasted material in your learning period? Yes/No………
Are you still prepared to write, even if your spelling and grammar is poor? Yes/No………
Do you like writing? Yes/No………
Do you think you can research deeply for any book you may write? Yes/No………
Have you written anything in the last month? Yes/No………
Are you prepared to receive criticism from writing coaches? Yes/N0

Count up all the YES answers.
If you had ten or less YES answers – you lack (for now) sufficient motivation to be an author. But that can change with determination.
If you had ten to fifteen YES answers – you are close but need more motivation. Perhaps set some personal writing goals. Look at the NO answers and consider what you can do to make them a YES.
If you had fifteen or more YES answers – you are ready. It might be of benefit to revisit your NO answers and see if you can turn them around. By doing so you increase your odds.

Knowing your results, you should have a better idea of your willingness to become an author. Are you ready to be an author?
