Spontaneous Writing: Unlock Creativity & Express Yourself Freely

Spontaneous writing is a drill that teaches you many things about writing.

You write for a set period (in your workbook), usually around ten minutes, on a topic chosen at random. You start writing and do not lift your pen off the page for the selected time period. Do not worry about grammar, spelling or punctuation – do not slow the creative process. The only thing you need to worry about is getting your ideas down cohesively.

With these writing drills, the subject matter is not important as you do not want to become too attached to the result.

Benefits of spontaneous writing:

  • You learn to write quickly and with flow (flow will be explained in a future post).
  • It teaches you to start writing without procrastinating. You will be surprised at how easy it gets after a time. A good writer can write about anything any time. You need to be able to write under any circumstances, especially if you are away from your favourite desk – perhaps on a bus, in a noisy environment like a café, without preamble, fidgeting, or other delaying tactics.
  • It will teach you write clearly.
  • You will gain confidence.

Over the years I have seen amazing improvement in students writing because of spontaneous writing exercises. If you are serious about writing, you should incorporate these into your daily life. I know of top-class writers who have done these drills all their lives.
